THE MAID OF HONOR: ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Maid of Honor is an important role in a wedding, traditionally held by a close friend or relative of the bride. If you were chosen to be a Maid of Honor in a wedding, congratulations! The bride truly values your relationship and is putting all her trust and faith in you to help her with the most important day of her life.

There are a wide range of responsibilities and tasks associated with this important role. Some of those tasks include:

  1. Support System: One of the most crucial roles of the Maid of Honor is to provide emotional support to the bride throughout the wedding planning process. They listen to the bride's concerns, offer advice, and help alleviate any pre-wedding jitters. They are a trusted confidant and friend lending a supportive ear when necessary, unloading the bride of any burdens she is carrying.

  2. Master Planner:The Maid of Honor often assists the bride with various wedding planning tasks to relieve her of as much stress as possible. This may include helping with selecting the wedding dress, choosing bridesmaids' dresses, organizing bridal showers and bachelorette parties, and coordinating some of the wedding day logistics.

  3. DIY Superstar: The Maid of Honor will often assist with DIY projects and crafts ahead of the wedding day such as addressing invitations, assembling favors, making welcome bags, or arranging centerpieces. This may or may not require an excessive amount of online shopping and/or trips to Michaels and Trader Joe’s.

  4. Leader of the Pack: The Maid of Honor acts as a liaison between the bride and the bridesmaids ensuring that everyone is aware of their responsibilities, coordinating dress fittings, hair and makeup schedules, rehearsal details, spa or nail appointments, and communicates any necessary information. She keeps everything organized and is the bride’s most trusted companion.

  5. It’s an Emergency: The Maid of Honor puts together a bag of emergency supplies such as bandaids, hair pins, glue, sunscreen, tape, scissors, hairspray, and other small items in that may be needed at some point throughout the wedding day.

  6. Let Her Speak: One of the traditional highlights for the Maid of Honor is delivering a speech or toast during the reception. They will typically share stories about their relationship and history together, express their love and support for the couple, and offer well wishes.

  7. Dancing Queen: The Maid of Honor is no stranger to the dance floor. She is used to getting the party going and keeping everyone on their feet, requesting all the best songs and making sure everyone is having the best time.

  8. Go to Girl: On the wedding day the Maid of Honor is there to assist the bride in any way needed. This may include helping her get dressed, holding onto her vows, knowing where her cell phone is, takes phone calls for her and relays messages, making sure she is eating throughout the day and staying hydrated, checking in with the groom or groomsmen on the bride’s behalf, holds the groom’s ring during the ceremony, holds her bouquet during the ceremony, adjusts her veil or train when needed, and rallies the rest of the wedding party when it’s time for those group photos.

It's important to note that the specific duties of the Maid of Honor can vary depending on cultural or personal preferences, and the bride may customize the role to fit her needs. The Maid of Honor’s primary goal is to support the bride and help make her wedding day as special and stress-free as possible.
