VIDEOGRAPHER VS. CONTENT CREATOR - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

When it comes to wedding vendors most couples are familiar with the ones you hear about the most - wedding photographers, DJs, florists, planners, and caterers. If you’re like most of us and on social media you are probably starting to notice that the phrase ‘content creator’ is trending and popping up seemingly out of nowhere and you may be asking yourself - what is a content creator and do I need one for my wedding? We’re going to dive right into it and answer those questions and more!

Content creators are not new, we are just hearing about them more as they have recently started taking over social media and the wedding industry by storm. Couples and wedding vendors are hiring content creators to capture real moments in real time including all those sought after behind the scenes details and candid emotions of a wedding day.

What makes content creators so appealing to couples is how easy and fast these videos and highlight reels can be created and shared. Content is captured mostly by iPhone and can be made into short, downloadable and shareable reels and videos and given to the couple within 24 hours, unlike traditional videography which can take several weeks or months. While content creators and videographers both capture video and provide storytelling capabilities, there are some unique differences to keep in mind.

Videographers

Videographers, like photographers are uniquely skilled and qualified in their chosen craft. They likely have spent years developing and perfecting their skills through specialized education, training and on the job experience. Their goal in essence is to create a professional film of your wedding day using high quality video equipment that tells a story from start to finish. Videographers typically have a process and a list of specific ideas or elements they want to capture in real time such as the couple getting ready for the day, all aspects of the ceremony and reception including video of your guests, the cocktail reception, dinner servie, speeches, formal dances, cake cutting, and end of the night send-off. Oftentimes the videographer and phtographer will work closely together to capture all the important details of your day working side by side. The turnaround time for you to see the video depends on what you have asked for or agreed to. It can take several weeks or longer to see the final result due to the editing process which can also include adding music and audio elements and graphics to create a more cinematic experience.

Content Creators

Content creators capture raw footage of the wedding day with little to no editing which can then be sent to the couple within 24 hours. They provide the couple with a shortened version of a wedding video, usually highlights from the day and behind the scenes moments that are usually not planned or scripted. The videos are easily shareable and couples love the fact that they can have it right on their phone to send to friends and family or easily post to social media. Content creators are an ideal choice for couples who want to have a video of their wedding day without the high end production or cost. They are a lower cost alternative offering a more casual video experience.

When it comes to choosing what vendors to hire and deciding between a videographer and content creator it will likely come down to what aligns with your budget and your vision. If you are someone who loves posting on social media and enjoys the candid and spontaneous moments with the ability to share highlights in real time, a content creator may be for you. If you want a full length, high quality video that is going to capture all the important elements and details of the day and tell a complete story from various perspectives, hiring a videographer may be a better option. If you have the ability to hire both - you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Always interview your vendors and ask a lot of questions before making your final decisions. Ask for reviews and read testimonials from past clients, look through their portfolio, discuss your needs and expectations, and get to know their personality and style to see if they’d be a good match.
